Composition of 2 Genres Essay:
Fiction: The Legend of the Supercomputer
It was an ordinary day in bustling city of New York. A young man, Jan Sander, was working at his dead-end job at some random company he doesn’t care about. Jan Sander was a young man, black hair, brown eyes, tanned skin. He was in his mid-twenties and bored out of his mind. He has no family or friends who really care him, he is all alone. After finishing his shift for the day, he was tired and hungry. He didn’t really have much money, working paycheck to paycheck. Jan was walking home; the air was freezing, and the night was pitch black. Then suddenly a strike of lightning came dropping down from the sky. It had hit Jan straight in the head.
Jan had dropped straight to the ground, knocked out cold. When he had awoken, he was in a hospital bed.
“Ugh… w-what happened to me?”, he said weakly.
A doctor had walked in. He seemed to be in his late sixties, a kind looking old man.
“You have been out for a couple days now.”, the doctor said.
“Oh uh, sorry about that, I uh will get going.”, Jan said.
Jan stood up; he felt a little lighter. The doctor tried to explain to him that he was struck by lightning and that he shouldn’t be able to stand up, let alone move around.
“Sorry doc, I gotta get to work. My boss is gonna kill me for not showing up the last couple days. Can you just give me my bill?”, Jan was rushing to get out.
The doctors ran some basic tests to see if Jan could move. He passed and had no serious injuries, strange. Jan looked over his hospital bill and realized he would be in debt for a couple years, great… He left the hospital as fast as he could. On his way to his home, something popped up in his face. It looked like a menu; something you would see when pausing a game. He tried to touch it, but his hand went right through. He asked strangers if they could see the menu in front of him, they thought he was crazy and ignored him.
After messing around for a bit, Jan decided to read the menu.
“Task: Build a basic computer. Time remaining: 48 hours. Punishment for failure: Death.”, the menu stated.
“What the? Im gonna die???”, he started freaking out.
Jan rushed home as fast as possible and went online. “I need computer parts! I need computer parts! I need computer parts! I need computer parts! I need computer parts!”, Jan kept repeating in his head. He went to amazon, luckily, he had amazon prime, his shipment would arrive tomorrow. Jan bought PC case, a central processing unit (CPU), motherboard, memory (RAM), graphics processing unit (GPU), storage, power supply unit (PSU), system cooling, and an operating system (OS). Jan did not leave his house that day, he waited for his packaged to arrive.
The next day when the packages arrived, Jan got to work. The first thing he did was strip down the computer case and place the screws in a plastic bag. Next, Jan installed 2 cooling fans. Jan put two fans in the front of the computer drawing in air and one fan in the back pushing out air. Next Jan, installed the motherboard. Then Jan laid his motherboard down inside the chassis and secured the mother board into the pc case. After the mother board, Jan worked on installing his CPU. Jan saw that his CPU was connected to his mother board and screwed on to his pc case. There should be a slot in the pc case for the CPU. After installing the CPU, Jan placed 8 gigabytes of ram into his computer. Jan connected his hard storage drives to the mother board and slotted it into his pc. Jan than installed his power supply and made sure to angle it near the fans for cooling. He angled his fan down and away from the interior of his computer. Jan plugged in all the buttons he needed, then connected his PC to an old monitor, mouse and keyboard he had laying around.
He turned on the computer, hoping it would work. It turned on; it was a success. Then another menu popped up in front of him.
“Congratulations, Task: Build a basic computer has been completed, level increased by one.”
“New Task: Find the parts for the legendary supercomputer scattered all across the land. Time limit: 2 years. Punishment for failure: Death.”
“HUH! WHAT THE!! I JUST FINISHED THIS COMPUTER”, Jan exclaimed.
Seems like Jan’s life will be more interesting from now on.
Crime/Mystery: The peculiar mystery of the computer thief
It was a dark and rainy night in Detroit. A middle-aged man was sitting in his office, he wore a mask that covered his face, a long brown trench coat, dirty boots, and a suit underneath his coat. No one knew who he was or his identity, so they went by his code name, Agent 45. Agent 45 worked as a detective that helped solve cold cases that the police couldn’t solve. However today, he was trying to further his skills in his passion. That passion was building computers. He had already bought all the parts that he needed. He took the day off and started working on his project.
The first thing he did was strip down the computer case and place the screws in a plastic bag. Next, Agent 45 installed 2 cooling fans. Agent 45 put two fans in the front of the computer drawing in air and one fan in the back pushing out air. Next Agent 45 installed the motherboard. Then Agent 45 laid his motherboard down inside the chassis and secured the mother board into the pc case. After the mother board, Agent 45 worked on installing his CPU. Agent 45 saw that his CPU was connected to his mother board and screwed on to his pc case. There should be a slot in the pc case for the CPU. After installing the CPU, Agent 45 placed 8 gigabytes of ram into his computer. Agent 45 connected his hard storage drives to the mother board and slotted it into his pc. Agent 45 than installed his power supply and made sure to angle it near the fans for cooling. He angled his fan down and away from the interior of his computer. Agent 45 plugged in all the buttons he needed, then connected his PC to an old monitor, mouse, and keyboard he had laying around.
After completing this project, Agent 45 was very happy and decided to use his computer for the rest of the day. He has a great time browsing the internet and playing games.
Rationale:
The main reason I used fiction and mystery was because I felt it would be more fun for my readers to read it this way. I wanted to make an essay that was easy for anyone to understand. The audience demographic of my essay is newcomers who want to learn how to build a computer. This type of genre helps me convey that message of building computers while also allowing me to be creative with how I write my stories.
